Umb-Rella Rules, Guidelines and Criteria
There are a few requirements you must fulfill before you submit an application to be reviewed.
- No overage material will be accepted, and we reserve the right to refuse to review your site.
- Layout changes are accepted as long as you’re not at the top of the queue. Should such a situation arise, we ask that you notify at least three days in advance and we may discontinue reviewing the layout of your site.
- You may apply for a re-review after a month, if we deem that at least 70% of the advice in the first review has been taken to heart.
Reviewing Criteria
First Impression
These will be our initial reactions upon visiting your website, which will understandably, concentrate more on the practicality and presentation of your website. If your site takes forever to load, or if you have a useless splash page, then this is where we’ll mention it. With this will be a general summary of what we think of your site visually, as well as our expectations of your site as we continue with the review.
Layout
Not only will we concentrate on the aesthetics of your layout here (practicality of navigation, clarity of graphics, originality and artistic qualities), but also on coding. While we don’t necessary push for validation, we do encourage clean and semantic coding. While we will accept WYSIWYG built sites, we won’t accept automatic page builders. We advocate cross-browser and cross-resolution compatibility, as well as clear and readable text.
Content
Quality over quantity is the motto here at Umb-Rella. We don’t care if you have a collection of the 100 most ‘fascinating’ reads collected through email forwards, we care about how original (e.g. self-created), your content is. We like interesting content that use proper spelling, grammar, and decent sentence structure but we will no longer point out every single little spelling mistake that we see. We get bored easily, and ideally, your content should keep us occupied for at least twenty minutes. It helps if your content is laid out in a logical order: organisation is key.
Final Comments
Major points throughout the review will be repeated here, as well as a general summary of the weaknesses and strengths of your site. This is where we’ll state our own personal opinion of your site, removed from the objectivity of the review.
Submit Your Site
Please note: We no longer have deadlines for reviews. We will review at our leisure, in our spare time. There are always a maximum of 10 sites in queue, so get in quick when submissions are open!
